Kirill Gerstein

Kirill Gerstein

Presented by Saffron Hall

“This is the kind of serious, intelligent and virtuosic music-making that keeps classical music alive” enthused The Observer of the Russian-American pianist Kirill Gerstein.

He has the curiosity and depth of imagination to match the wonders of his technique and musicianship, and this thrilling recital programme is no different. It’s based on some popular showstoppers from the pianist’s repertoire – the wild, exhilarating La Valse by Ravel, Schumann’s impishly entertaining Carnaval - a kind of musical mini-drama based on an imaginary masked ball - and Grainger’s wonderfully flamboyant take on Tchaikovsky’s much-loved waltz. Into this dance mix are planted exquisite miniatures from our own time to form a garland of pieces inspired by flowers and the humble waltz.

“Gerstein is a real phenomenon... The great musical landmarks of this evening were entertaining yet full of depth... a poet of sound who knows how to cast a spell on his listeners.” Der Tagesspiegel, Germany
