Saffron Walden Choral Society - There was a Child
Saffron Walden Choral Society - There was a ChildPresented by Saffron Hall
This Saffron Walden Choral Society concert offers a truly life-affirming programme.
There Was a Child is a moving and beautiful secular piece by Jonathan Dove, commissioned to commemorate the life of a young man who drowned aged only 19. Dove’s nine movements explore birth, aspects of childhood and growing independence, as well as loss, setting texts by Wordsworth, Keats, Tennyson, Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman to celebrate the powerful impact his short life had on all those around him. Whilst poignant it is also a joyful and mischievous work. Saffron Walden’s youth choir, SignuptoSing, along with other local children’s choirs, will join the main choir adding the ‘essence’ of childhood.
Francis Poulenc’s spacious and monumental Gloria is one of the greatest sacred works of the twentieth century and is fully deserving of its immense popularity. This exceptionally melodious work partners the Dove perfectly.
