About you

Are you passionate about bringing world-class arts and culture to your local community? Would you like to play a vital role supporting a small but dedicated team bringing world class art and culture to Saffron Walden?

If so, volunteering with Saffron Hall Trust may be perfect for you. Working closely with our staff team and community of like-minded volunteers, our volunteer roles would suit social and outgoing individuals looking to make a regular commitment.

You might support Saffron Hall Trust by helping us give our visitors a safe, inclusive, and unforgettable experience or perhaps you’re looking for a structured, regular, routine in a social, office-based environment, with aims to improve your working skills and confidence.

Alternatively, you may already have professional skills that you’d simply like to utilise to support Saffron Hall in meeting its vision and mission.

You will likely enjoy working in teams, tackling a variety of tasks and have the keen attention to detail required to stay alert and ensure our guests have a safe and memorable experience. In many cases, you’ll also be able to enjoy our incredible programme of events whilst you volunteer!

Whatever your focus, we’d love to hear from individuals keen on supporting our charity in bringing our exciting programme of events and community projects to life, helping Saffron Hall to function effectively and sustainably.

About the roles

Event Volunteers
Volunteers are essential to the culture and running of Saffron Hall Trust. Whether showing audience members to their seats, or selling programmes or merchandise, they are often the most visible face of the Hall, providing a warm welcome and – essentially – working with staff to keep audiences safe and secure whilst on our premises.

Upholding this commitment and being attentive to the needs of guests throughout performances is at the core of this role, and though enjoying the performances can be a perk of this role, the safety, security and enjoyment of visitors is always our top priority.

Core duties

  • To fulfil a range of stewarding and related functions supporting the smooth delivery of our events (including concerts the Hall runs itself, those where an outside organisation has hired our space, and community participation events such as workshops, school performances or our music therapy project for people with dementia and their companions);
  • To support the provision of a warm, welcoming, safe and accessible environment for all visitors at all times, collaborating with other volunteers and working under the guidance of our staff team;
  • To act with professionalism at all times, as a positive ambassador for Saffron Hall Trust.

What we offer and our expectations of you

  • We offer a well-trained and well-supported role, including shadowing opportunities to help you learn with confidence. There are also opportunities to socialise with fellow volunteers.
  • We expect you to engage fully with the induction process, fulfilling all training requirements and willingly undertaking any periodic refreshers we consider necessary;
  • We give all volunteers a clear point of contact at (and outside of) the events at which you volunteer, giving you different means of support and guidance and sharing any issues or concerns. We expect you to familiarise yourself with the Volunteer Handbook and use our ‘Assemble’ online platform to book the shifts at which you want to volunteer;
  • To always act professionally with visitors and to respect your colleagues – other volunteers and staff – working within the spirit of the policies and values of Saffron Hall Trust, as laid out in the Handbook and Volunteer Agreement.
  • We offer as part of the volunteer role the opportunity to experience world-class performances from a diverse range of artists and genres.

Please note: The majority of our events roles can be quite physically demanding, carrying legal obligations around the health and safety of our visitors. We therefore do ask questions about your current health status when you submit your expression of interest. Volunteering at Saffron Hall Trust is open to everyone, and where possible we will work with you to find a role that meets your personal requirements.
