Sean Shibe meets Dunedin Consort

Presented by Saffron Hall

Sean Shibe walking down a street, wearing a grey suit and holding his guitar

Acclaimed Scottish guitarist Sean Shibe returns to Saffron Hall to head a folk-inspired programme from Edinburgh’s ever-inventive baroque ensemble tracing the roots of the cultural bonds between Scotland and Canada. Dowland’s heart-rending Lachrimae calls across the centuries and the Atlantic to the melodic, meditative modernism of Linda Catlin Smith, whilst folksong and the exquisite delicacy of Scottish renaissance lute manuscripts are the perfect foil to Sir James MacMillan’s timeless miniature.

We course through Purcell and Geminiani to a major new work for modern guitar and gut strings from the Canadian Cassandra Miller. Miller’s music so often draws inspiration from the baroque, from traditional music and the sounds of nature; her cello concerto was included by The Guardian in a survey of the best classical music of the 21st century.

“… Cassandra Miller’s music has knocked me sideways. Bold, kind-hearted, wistful, brave, simple, sophisticated…miraculously beautiful…” The Herald
