In 2016, Saffron Hall provided Primary and Secondary teachers with an opportunity to pick up some singing tips from Apollo5 – one of the country’s leading a cappella vocal groups.

Aldeburgh Music’s ‘Friday Afternoons’ project, conceived as part of the Britten centenary celebrations in 2013, now commissions new songs for children’s voices on an annual basis. All resources for these songs, including scores, audio, backing tracks and interactive resources from Charanga are available to anybody, free of charge, from fridayafternoonsmusic.co.uk

The Friday Afternoons global initiative aims to encourage singing at any level, and to challenge young people and their teachers to look at new repertoire, and to work creatively to explore their voices and musical skills.

This CPD session, run by professional a cappella ensemble and educationalists Apollo 5, took a look at 2016's newly-commissioned songs by Jonathan Dove, suggesting ways in which teachers can introduce this repertoire to their pupils, working to explore creative ways of approaching and performing the songs, and explaining how the Friday Afternoons project can become an integral part of a school’s singing strategy and vocal work.

Two sessions were offered:

  • Monday 13 June 2016, 3.45pm - 5.45pm at SWCHS
  • Monday 27 June 2016, 3.45pm - 5.45pm at Lyons Hall Primary School
