A New Year's Celebration
A New Year's CelebrationPresented by Saffron Hall
In the concert hall, nothing says New Year like Strauss’ waltz The Blue Danube and it provides a rousing conclusion to tonight’s programme, along with music from his hit operetta Die Fledermaus.
The swirling dances and operatic high jinks of 19th century Vienna contrast with music from Spain. Rodrigo’s guitar concerto is amongst the most popular of all classical works, with its famous slow movement used by film directors, jazz musicians and brass band alike. If the waltz is Vienna’s dance, the fandango, habanera, and seguidilla belong to southern Spain, inspiring arias from Bizet’s Carmen, de Falla’s ballet music, and Albéniz’ sound picture of Andalusia – music bathed in Iberian sunshine to lift the spirits in midwinter. Presented from the stage by Katie Derham, this is a New Year’s treat from the BBC Concert Orchestra and soloists.
