Saffron Walden's own Choral Society and Symphony Orchestra join forces once again to present an exciting Anglo-French programme. They open with Parry's I was Glad, an anthem that will be familiar to all.
The orchestra will then play Saint-Saëns' charming Le Rouet d'Omphale and John Foulds' nostalgic music-picture April-England. The first half ends with Parry's Blest Pair of Sirens. The main work of the evening is Poulenc's Stabat Mater, written after the sudden death of a friend and Poulenc's subsequent return to the Catholic faith. In 12 short movements, Poulenc considered this to be the work he would be most remembered for.
