The Travelling Companion
The Travelling CompanionPresented by Saffron Hall
This last of Stanford’s nine operas is after a dark fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson. It has been described as “his finest operatic achievement: the music is often solemn and romantic, and curiously impressive”. The last professional performance was over eighty years ago, and now NSO, celebrating its forty years of presenting lesser known gems, gives it an overdue and well deserved revival. This performance will be recorded live – the first recording of a Stanford opera. Toby Purser conducts an outstanding cast with NSO Orchestra and Chorus in an innovative staging (slightly modified for recording) directed by Paul Higgins and designed by Isabella Van Braeckel.
Pre-Show Talk
There will be a pre-show talk for this event starting at 2.15pm presented by Prof Jeremy Dibble, President of the Stanford Society and author of 'Charles Villiers Stanford: Man and Musician'. Free Entry for ticket holders.
The music has wonderful vigour and charm. The soloists are all admirable, and Paul Higgins has done a sensibly unfussy job of staging the piece” Rupert Christiansen – The Telegraph
“Fine performances… Narrative values are good and the substantial chorus works hard and to impressive effect” George Hall – The Stage
