An interview with Bruce Liu

You first performed with the China NCPA Orchestra when you were just 17 – how does it feel to be reuniting with the Orchestra for this tour?

“Reuniting with the Orchestra feels very special to me, because when I first performed with them at 17 it was a really formative experience – one of my earliest opportunities to work with a world-class ensemble. I remember both feeling very nervous and incredibly inspired. It was also my first time playing in China actually, and in that incredible NCPA building – playing in that building for the first time felt unreal. Coming back now many years later feels like returning home, but with the perspective and growth that time has brought. I’m very excited to make music together again and to share this journey with the audience.”

You’re performing Ravel’s Piano Concerto – what do you personally love about this music?

“It’s one of those pieces that feels like a joy right from beginning to end. I love how it blends with the right range of influences, from jazz, classical and even hints of Basque folk rhythms but all remaining so refined and transparent. And then comes the second movement – it’s pure poetry. For me it’s a piece that celebrates both freedom and elegance. It’s challenging of course, but it’s always a pleasure to perform because it speaks so directly to the heart.”

You won the International Chopin Piano Competition in 2021 – has life changed for you after winning this prestigious competition?

“It was truly a life-changing moment, it opened so many doors and suddenly I had opportunities to perform around the world and connect with so many people in a much deeper way. But beyond the professional impact, I would say it also pushed me to grow personally – with more visibility comes more responsibility. I have become more thoughtful about what I want to express through music. It has been an exciting journey and I’m very grateful for everything the Competition has brought to my life.”

Are you looking forward to collaborating with Maestro Myung-Whun Chung?

“Very much so – Maestro Chung is someone I have admired for a long time, not just for his incredible musicianship but also for the depth and sincerity he brings to everything he does. Of course, beyond being a conductor he’s an incredible pianist. Collaborating with him is always an opportunity to learn, to listen and to create something meaningful together – so I’m very much looking forward to the musical dialogue we will share on stage.”
