Closeup of young musicians playing in a bustling jazz club

The ever-inventive jazz composer, pianist, teacher and presenter Nikki Yeoh is one of our most creative and groundbreaking musicians in any genre. Her list of musical collaborations range from contemporary British jazz stars Courtney Pine and Cleveland Watkiss to Neneh Cherry and cult American hip-hop band The Roots. The multi-media work Speechmik X-Ploration fosters a message of unity and plurality - as poignant today as it was at its premiere over a quarter of a century ago.

It is complemented by a new piece Nucleus, commissioned by NYJO and dedicated to the late, great UK trumpeter Ian Carr, a towering figure in UK contemporary jazz and formative influence on Yeoh. The expanded line-up for this performance, including strings and woodwind, shows Yeoh and NYJO re-examining the kaleidoscopic range of colours and thrilling diversity of styles in contemporary big-band jazz.
