“One fine day when the time was right, the order of the variations fell into place” wrote Copland of his Piano Variations. If only composing were that easy!
Mozart, as ever, makes it seem so, and is the framework for Paul Lewis’ fascinating variations on a theme. Each of the works either is – or includes - a theme and variations, but what wonderful contrasts they provide; Mozart at his pithy, capricious best, Mendelssohn’s darkly intense (though often dreamily poetic) music and Copland’s spritely, jazzy transformation of an odd little motif. To round if off though, one of the most famous solo piano works in history – Mozart’s sonata ends in the fiery, instantly recognisable ‘Rondo alla Turca’.
