What if your younger lover fell for someone his own age? Could you help him defeat his rival? Make him happy at your own expense? That’s the dilemma faced by the Marschallin – one of opera’s most complex and intriguing characters – in Richard Strauss’ bittersweet comic masterpiece Der Rosenkavalier.

It’s a dilemma which gets even knottier when the Marschallin’s lecherous cousin Baron Ochs, tries to pursue both the heroine and the hero, disguised as a chambermaid. It all plays out accompanied by a sumptuously melodic score, and concludes with the most ravishing trio of the entire operatic repertoire. Bringing it to life in a concert performance is the much-lauded Saffron Opera Group, which celebrates its tenth anniversary in the glow of dazzling reviews for past productions, including a complete Ring Cycle: ‘incandescent’ (Opera Magazine), ‘highest international standards’ (Wagner News), ‘spellbinding’ (The Guardian).
