A Most Marvellous Party
Presented by Saffron Hall
Noel Coward’s songs encapsulate life’s joys and sorrows, its caprice and consolations.
Following his critically acclaimed appearance at the Last Night of the Proms, tenor Nicky Spence comes to Saffron Hall for an intimate evening of song, bringing his trademark warmth, wit and irrepressible personality to the stage.
His music and lyrics endure - and inspire. A versatile and vivacious trio present then in tandem with Coward’s classical contemporaries, letting their hair down in a style of which Coward would surely have approved – from the quirky salon music of Poulenc to big-hearted lyricism of Americans Rorem and Lehmann, and pithy cabaret songs from Britten and Auden. And there is, of course, Gershwin, perhaps the greatest songwriter of them all. High emotion and the high life distilled into memorable songs from some of the twentieth century’s great tunesmiths.
“When Laura got blind on Dubonnet and gin
And scratched her veneer with a Cartier pin
I couldn't have liked it more.”
