The bell-like purity of Allegri’s choral writing and emotional heft of Barber’s lament form iconic works of contemplative stillness, familiar to many of us. They provide the perfect foil for Sir James MacMillan’s mesmerising rendering of an Eastertide ritual.
It is a modern masterpiece of both deep spirituality and dramatic immediacy, universal feelings of grief, anguish – and hope – conjured with searing intensity and ethereal beauty. Britten Sinfonia and the superb choral forces of Nigel Short’s Tenebrae have championed Seven Last Words and form an alluring combination for this emotionally charged triptych.
