Saffron Walden Symphony Orchestra

SWSO are delighted to welcome Robin Ashwell for the first time as soloist in Bax's Phantasy for viola and orchestra, using Robin's new edition of this rarely performed work.
We open with Barber's First Essay, premiered by Toscanini in 1938 in a concert which also saw Barber's Adagio for Strings make its first appearance. The second half is given over to Bartok's mighty Concerto for Orchestra. In five movements, this epic work puts all instruments and sections through their paces, providing challenges but always within a wonderfully melodic framework. The famous finale brings this concert to an edge-of-the-seat conclusion.
