Cambridge Summer Music: Festival Finale Celebrating the legacy of the Boyd Neel Orchestra
Cambridge Summer Music: Festival Finale Celebrating the legacy of the Boyd Neel OrchestraPresented by Presented by Cambridge Summer Music
The Cambridge Summer Music Festival comes to a close with a fitting finale of music for string orchestra.
Celebrating the legacy of the Boyd Neel Orchestra
After studying medicine at Cambridge, Boyd Neel instead followed his passion for music and founded an ensemble of players from the Royal Academy and Royal College of Music. In 1933 the Boyd Neel London String Orchestra (later the Boyd Neel Orchestra) was born. A pioneering chamber ensemble, Boyd Neel was responsible for commissioning and reviving some of the most beloved and popular chamber works that we know today. This programme, especially devised by our Festival Director Ben Johnson, pays tribute to Neel and his ensemble, gathering together music closely associated with them including Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings, which the Boyd Neel Orchestra gave the premiere of in 1944.
