Moving from the thunderous, gripping drama of its opening funeral march by way of an ironic scherzo to an alto solo of unparalled serene beauty, Mahler’s Resurrection symphony grapples with the ultimate human questions of life and death. The last movement is one of the most thrilling musical finales of all time, in which a massive orchestra, a soaring pipe organ, and a colossal choir unite in a blinding blaze of sound and pure emotion.
