Bruckner conjures cathedrals in sound. His majestic symphony inhabits lofty, vaulted spaces – contemplative, profound visions and torrents of sound built on immense architectural foundations. Time moves at a different pace here, nowhere more so than the impassioned slow movement, a memorial to Wagner.
Conductor and soloist - two wonderfully imaginative and assured musicians – are on home territory here, in a mighty triptych of works that unfold with inexorable logic and cumulative power.
