By turns wild, witty and mysterious, Bartók’s spectacular showpiece for an orchestra of virtuosos is a thrilling ride.

It’s a celebration of all an orchestra can be and - with its folk-tinged melodies and ebullient dances – a tableaux of pictures in sound of his native Hungary. Viktoria Mullova is one of today’s superstar violinists - poised, lyrical and imaginative. They are qualities well suited to Brahms’ majestic concerto, with its lyricism and serenity bookended by the violin’s impassioned opening and the raucous gypsy dance of the finale. Wagner’s operatic overture – noble, voluptuous – is a work considered by the composer as “a musical artwork entire in itself.” The Hallè’s new Principal Conductor is causing quite a stir in Manchester, this is his first appearance at Saffron Hall.
