Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment with Steven Isserlis
Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment with Steven IsserlisPresented by Saffron Hall
“Today you will hear a real piece!” So declared Brahms of Dvořák’s cello concerto before attending a Vienna Philharmonic concert. Steven Isserlis and Maxim Emelyanychev – close collaborators of the orchestra - reconstruct that programme of March 1897. It was to be the last time Brahms attended a public performance of his own music.
Brahms’ mighty final symphony contains music that is “some of the darkest and deepest in the 19th century” according to journalist and broadcaster Tom Service. Soloist Steven Isserlis says Dvořák’s concerto “contains everything: beauty, heroism, poetry, joy, pathos, profundity.” Haydn’s symphony gets its nickname from the finale’s evocative hunting horns, but the whole work glows with the colours, revitalising warmth and energy of the great outdoors.
