From the foreboding of its solo trumpet opening, Mahler’s symphony exerts a taut grip and never lets go. Visceral, tender, garish and finally exultant, it seems to teeter on the precipice between delirium and despair.

Even by Mahler’s standards, it’s an all-encompassing, tumultuous creation, with that famous Adagietto, his love-song without words, at its heart, and a whooping, hollering finale – perhaps the most uncomplicatedly joyous music he ever wrote. Though not without its darker undercurrents, Rachmaninov’s showstopper variations are vibrant and big-hearted, shot through with dazzling piano virtuosity and an impish wit.

'the refinement of Wong’s approach provided lightness and limpidity for each of Mahler’s deep shadows.' The Guardian on the Hallé’s Mahler
